Ruth: From Ordinary to Extraordinary

unnamed5

Ordinary kindness of imperfect people points us to the extraordinary kindness of God.  This is the story of Ruth, an ordinary “Moabite”, a people ancient Israel loved to hate.  But Ruth becomes the great-ancestor of Jesus, God’s most extraordinary act of kindness.  Join us for this four-week series reading through the ancient but profound book of Ruth.  Along the way we’ll explore ordinary and extraordinary redemption, welcome, reconciliation, and identity.

Nov 6 – Extraordinary Redemption
Nov 13 – Extraordinary Welcome (Speaker: Erin Wasinger)
Nov 20 – Extraordinary Reconciliation
Nov 27 – Extraordinary Identity (Speaker: Erin Wasinger)

Simplify

simplifyExhausted. Overwhelmed. Overscheduled. Sound familiar? Today’s velocity of life can consume and control us, until our breakneck pace begins to feel normal and expected. When we spend our lives doing things that keep us busy but don’t really matter, we sacrifice the things that do. What if your life could be different? Simplified living requires more than just cleaning out your closets or reorganizing your desk drawer. By eradicating the stuff that leaves your spirit drained, you can stop doing what doesn’t matter and start doing what does.

Oct 2 – From Exhausted to Energized (Energy)
Oct 9 – From Overscheduled to Organized
Oct 16 – From Drifting to Focused (Speaker: Mark Aupperlee)
Oct 23 – From Overwhelmed to in Control
Oct 30 – From Isolation to Connected (Speaker: Gretchen Williams)

Stuff My Church Does

stuffmychurchdoes

Why do we do…?

Committing to faith was never meant to be reduced mindlessly following another set of duties and responsibilities. The last thing any of us need is to add meaningless stuff into our already-full lives. So why DO the stuff we do? you ask.  Join Sycamore Creek and Potterville United Methodist Church as we spend four weeks with Stuff My Church Does.

Sep 4 – Disciple (Speakers: Mark Aupperlee and Gretchen Williams)
Sep 11 –  Music
Sep 18 – Prayer

The Essentials
essentials

What’s essential to faith and what’s not?

You can’t play baseball without a field.  You can’t travel without a solid suitcase.   You can’t cook without a good pan.  Some things are just essential.  Other things, not so much.  You can play ball without uniforms.  You can travel without four pairs of shoes.  You can cook without ten knives.  When it comes to Christian beliefs, some are just essential.  Others, not so much.  Join Sycamore Creek as we spend five weeks on The Essentials: Christ, Grace, Faith, Scripture, and God’s Glory.

Half Truths

halftruthsThey are simple phrases. They sound Christian – like something you might even find in the Bible: Everything happens for a reason, God helps those who help themselves, God won’t give you more than you can handle, God said it, I believe it, that settles it, and love the sinner, hate the sin. We’ve all heard these words. Maybe we’ve said them. They capture some element of truth–yet they also miss the point in very important ways. Join us as we search for the whole truth.

The Art of Neighboring
.
Neighboring

What if we loved our ACTUAL neighbors…

When Jesus was asked to sum up all his teaching into one command, he said to love God with everything we have and to love our neighbors as ourselves. What if Jesus meant that we should love our actual neighbors? Who are our neighbors — literally: the people who live next door or across the street? How can we love them or get to know them when we’re not even sure we’d have much in common? What could we gain if we tried? What if we could build stronger neighborhoods by simply getting to know the people who live closest to us? We’ll explore these questions during the series that kicks off May 29 and ends at Valhalla Park June 26 with a joint baptism service with SC’s neighbor, Mt. Hope UMC.

May 29/30 – Prequel (Speaker: Gretchen Williams)
June 5/6 – Commandment to Love Your Neighbor (Speaker: Rob Cook, Mt. Hope UMC)

Christian Atheist

Christian_Atheist

Christian. Why does that word put a bad taste in some people’s mouths? Maybe it’s because too many Christians don’t know how to follow Christ. Religion is one thing—but a relationship is something else entirely. This Easter, discover the difference in Christian Atheist.

Gospel of the Nobodies

nobodies

Most of us have at some point felt like a nobody – insignificant, invisible, worthless. The Gospel of Luke is a first century portrait of Jesus with a particular focus on his compassion for those who were considered nobodies. This Lent, join us as we read through the Gospel of Luke together. Each week, we’ll turn our attention to specific stories that illustrate Jesus’ concern for those on the margins of society, and as we do, we’ll hear his word for our lives today.

Lent is the forty days leading up to Easter (March 27th) when we prepare ourselves to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.  Two moments of celebration along the way are Ash Wednesday (February 10th), the first day of Lent, and Maundy Thursday (March 24th), the Thursday before Easter when the church remembers Jesus washing his disciples’ feet.  On Maundy Thursday we’ll gather at a local laundromat to offer FREE quarters and detergent along with food and drinks.  Join us as we seek to continue Jesus’ compassion today.

I Want to Believe

believeGhosts.  Paranormal.  Mysteries.  It’s all out there.  Or is it?  I want to believe.  Join us for a fun X-Files style exploration of the most mysterious paranormal story in the Bible.  Jesus’ friends think they see a ghost.  Or did they?  The truth is still out there.  In the waves and on the water.  This series will explore the story of Jesus walking on water fro three perspectives.  Matthew, Mark and John all recount the same story, but the details have a differences.  A conspiracy?  Maybe.  Maybe not.

The Christian Wallet

wallet“Life is not found in the abundance of possessions.”  Jesus said it, we claim to believer it – but do we truly trust it?  How much time, energy and resources do we expend attempting to buy, earn or find something that ultimately can’t be bought, earned, or found?  Join us in January as we kick off a message series sure to challenge AND set us free as we discover how to spend, live and give like Jesus.

The Line Between Good & Evil

good&evil“If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”
~Alexander Solzhenitsyn
Yes, the line between good and evil runs through you.  It runs through us all. Kindness or cruelty, truth or deceit, compassion or calloused unconcern, faithfulness or infidelity, mercy or revenge – you know the struggle. And we’ve each been affected by the struggle in others. Why is there evil? Why do we struggle? How can we overcome evil with good?

Nov 29/30 – Evil’s Ultimate Defeat (Guest Speaker: Mark Aupperlee)
Nov 22/23 – Making Sense of the Devil
Nov 15/16 – Struggle Between Good & Evil

What On Earth Am I Here For?

whatonearthThe most basic question everyone faces in life is Why am I here? What is my purpose? Self-help books suggest that people should look within, at their own desires and dreams, but Rick Warren says the starting place must be with God and his eternal purposes for each life. Real meaning and significance comes from understanding and fulfilling God’s purposes for putting us on earth. This book helps readers understand God’s incredible plan for their lives. Warren enables them to see the big picture of what life is all about and begin to live the life God created them to live.  Throughout the fall our church will focus on this basic question through worship services, through small groups, and through a church-wide mission. Join a small group for 8 sessions this fall as we explore this book and this basic question together.

The First Carols of Christmas

Christmas2014We love the carols of Christmas.  There’s something about singing the story of the birth of the Savior that speaks to our heats and souls.  The scriptures tell us that from the beginning Christmas was filled with music.  From Mary’s first hymn of praise, “My soul glorifies the Lord,” to the chorus of Angels that sang, “Glory to God in the highest,” Christmas carols have celebrated the birth of Christ.  During the holiday season, we invite you to sing the familiar words and experience the message of Christmas through the carols.

Bod4God is a multifaceted opportunity at Sycamore Creek Church to help our community lose weight and get healthy.

Beginning on Super Bowl Sunday, February 2, Travis Jackson, #63 offensive center of the Rose Bowl Champions MSU football team will help us “kick off” our four-week teaching series. Travis is known for his “Yes! Yes! Yes!” touch-down dance. Travis will be sharing his story about coming to follow Jesus and some thoughts on what it means for his body to be a temple of God (a bigger temple than most!). Invite your MSU sports fan friends.

February 2nd will also kick-off a twelve week Biggest-Loser-like weight loss competition and health campaign run by Dr. Amanda Shoemaker. Come to the 9:30 service at Lansing Christian School, drop your kids off at Bod4God4Kids, and then stay for the Bod4God event at 11AM (your kids can join Kids Creek). This twelve-week campaign will include weigh-ins, video inspiration from health experts, and small group support. Those who participate will receive a special discount rate at the YMCA and at the Original Okinawan Karate in Holt.

From February to April all our small groups will be reading and discussing Bod4God. You can find mid-week support at one of a dozen or so small groups. You’ll find small groups meeting for men, women, couples, and young adults on most days and at many different times (before work, lunch time, and evenings). Check out the list.

February 9/10, 2014 – Inspiration

Christmas is NOT Your Birthday

bday

Every year, we say we’re going to cut back, simplify, and have a family Christmas that focuses on the real reason for the season – Jesus. But every year, advertisements beckon, the children plead, and it seems easier just to indulge our wants and whims. Overspending, overeating, materialism, and busyness rob us of our peace and joy and rob Jesus of his rightful role as the center of our celebration. It’s not your birthday. It’s Jesus’ birthday!

December 8/9, 2013 – Expect a Miracle
December 15/16, 2013 – Giving Up On Perfect
December 22/23, 2013 – Scandalous Love*
December 24, 2013 – Christmas Eve Jesus’ Wish List
December 29/30, 2013 – (Guest Speaker: Gretchen Williams)

We’ll celebrate Christmas Eve at Lansing Christian School at 5PM and at Jackie’s Diner at 7PM with a $10 Christmas Eve dinner. Bring your whole family!

Make a BIG difference this Christmas by giving generously to the Christmas Eve offering. Take the challenge to give away as much as you spend celebrating Christmas or spend half as much and give half away. Get your entire family in on the challenge! 100% of this offering will be used to support our medical missions in Nicaragua, one of the poorest nations in the Americas.
